Introduction to Graphic Communications

In the offset press and bindery section of Graphic Communications students will be instructed in Shop Orientation, The basic theory of offset printing Equipment Safety, chemical safety and introduction to tools. Related math and measuring will be introduced and practiced. (1-D), (2-A), (2-I), (2-J), (5-B).

Typography/ Screen Printing

Through this course students, will begin working in a Mac computer lab using such programs as In Design , Photoshop and Illustrator. Students will concentrate on the principles of Typography learning that type makes or breaks your design. Students will be introduced into basic screen printing while creating a design to print on a T-shirt. Also students will be introduced to Digital file prep & output (2-D), (2-E), (2-G), (2-M)

Intro to Press Operations

In the Offset Press Section of the Graphic Communications program students will be introduced to the basic press systems operations, printing terminology, maintenance, proper adjustments and quality control throughout a press run. Plate making procedures will be covered. Students will be further instructed in the areas of safety and health, employability skills and related math. (1-C), (2-I), (4-A)

Design & Layout/Screen Printing

Through this course students, will concentrate on the Design & Layout Through such topics as Design Principles, Document Design, Contrast, Repetition, Space Texture, Value, scanning & digital capture. Students will design, Computer and hands on projects. Students will assist with screen printing production. (2-F), (2-G), (2-H).

Intro to Binding and Finishing Techniques

Emphasis in Bindery will be on binding and finishing techniques, terminology, operations and procedures, packaging and Calculating and cutting paper. Students will be further instructed in the areas of safety and health, employability skills and related math. (2-J)

Design & Cost Awareness /Screen Printing-

Emphasis on this course will be cost awareness related to the business. Learning to create job tickets and billing related to their jobs they be creating. Students will take the 10-Hour OSHA General course and receive their 10 hour card. Students will also be creating a 2- color shirt Design (1-A), (1-B), (1-C), (1-D), (6-B).

Emphasis on this course will be Digital Prepress, focusing on such topics as Digital Prepress, Digital Prepress Systems, and software. Students will also create a Personal stationary package- letterhead, envelope & business card.  Students will begin the process of choosing a topic for senior project. As seniors the students will be responsible for all aspects of a job including Billing, customer service, digital file prep, press and binding & finishing. Students will print single and multi-color jobs. Emphasis is on the systems of the press and operating procedures, troubleshooting, printing terminology, paper, ink types and their uses, make ready, quality control during a press run and clean-up. Printing processes will be covered. Binding and finishing operations to be practiced will include paper cutting, padding, shrink wrapping, stitching, drilling, folding, collating and packaging. Students will continue to print single and multi-color jobs. Thermograph will be taught and practiced. Emphasis is on operating procedures, troubleshooting, printing terminology, Paper classifications and characteristics, ink types and their uses.
