Design & Visual

Design & Visual prepares students for numerous art careers. This course is designed to give new students to the Design and Visual Communications program a sample of some of the different skills that will be taught in the program. Freshmen will explore some of the many different avenues that can be taken as a DVC student including illustration, sketching, photography and photo manipulation, animation, and web design. Students are encouraged to explore multiple mediums working both independently and in groups, while creating their portfolios. Students learn basic drawing skills, maintain a sketchbook, and creative problem-solving in a multimedia and multidimensional approach. In addition students will become OSHA certified in an OSHA 10 safety certification.

2AD Intro to Visual Art Sophomores This course introduces students to the formal elements of design, such as line, color and space, and design principals including contrast, repetition, balance and unity. These concepts are explored through both diverse instruction and hands on projects. Students learn basic drawing skills, maintain a sketchbook, and creative problem-solving in a multimedia and multidimensional approach. 3AD71A Intro to Web & Flash 301 Creating that perfect combination of visual appeal and usability is what web designers do for a living. By using type (lettering), images, and other visual devices, web designers create a digital playground where consumers can find the information they need while enjoying the ride. Students will learn how to use visual devices – such as typography, images, and color – to communicate, educate, and persuade. Part artist, part computer buff; you’ll need to master a variety of software programs, from HTML to web design and animation design tools. 3AD21A Web & Flash II-302 This course is a continuation of Web & Flash I. Students will pick up where they left off working towards proficiency with web design and animation techniques. Students will use web technologies such as CSS, JavaScript, and Flash to create user-friendly web sites and applications with the end user in mind. 3AD41B Digital Photo/ Design-301 This program introduces the student to the basic concepts used in crafting digital images. Discussions include camera, lens, and equipment options available to photographers. As students develop technical skills, they explore shooting techniques, composition and framing, and the basics of light control. Digital Photo & Portfolio Development -302 Students continue to study the craft of photography and digital editing. They also work on their ability to developing creative concepts and professional presentations. Students are encouraged to explore multiple mediums working both independently and in groups, while creating their portfolios. 4AD51B Multimedia Portfolio Development in I-401 Students will be encouraged to explore both contemporary and traditional art forms while honing their conceptual and image-making skills. They will look at materials and process, developing the artistic skills needed to realize their ideas. Projects are designed to encourage exploration, questioning and risk taking. 4AD51B Portfolio Development & Transitional Prep-402 Students will further their studies in Photography, illustration and multimedia design both on and off of the computer. They will further their development of design, communication, presentation skills while creating pieces for their senior portfolios. Students will prepare professional documents needed to successfully transition into the career world, such as work samples, artist statements, resumes, and certification/award documents. 4AD31A Web Design/ Portfolio-401 This course is designed to give those with web and graphic design experience a chance to showcase their skills. Students will begin collecting and rendering their best design work for use in a web portfolio. 4AD81A Web Design/ Portfolio 2-402 In addition to being exposed to Action Script and other Flash animation techniques and furthering their study of web design and development, students will continue to assemble their best work into a fully functional web site portfolio.
