Breaking Down Barriers

She can lug 10 toilets up a flight of stairs and carry a water heater by herself, but respect among her male peers is hard to come by.

Alexandra Gustafson, 18, a senior at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical School in Easton, hopes to land a job as a plumber after she graduates June 8.

The field is dominated by men, with women accounting for only 1.3 percent of those employed as plumbers or pipe fitters in 2009, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

When she enrolled in Southeastern, Alexandra, a Norton resident, initially looked into the culinary arts or cosmetology, but then thought she would like plumbing.
