It’s become a new generation’s Memorial Day. No one can forget that cloudless Tuesday morning in late summer when the world changed forever. Sept. 11, 2001, is seared in collective memory as other dates were for other generations: Dec. 7, 1941, and Nov. 22, 1963.

Today, on the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000, many feel compelled to commemorate it.

When Dan Shuman of East Bridgewater discovered his town didn’t have any plans to mark the anniversary, he helped to organize a memorial service, with a free picnic and concert, to begin at noon at his church, East Bridgewater United Methodist on High Street.

Donations poured in from local businesses, allowing the church to offer free hamburgers and hot dogs. The police and fire departments pledged their participation. And Brian Miller, whose brother Craig J. Miller, a Secret Service agent, was killed that day in New York, promised to attend, too. Shuman hopes 250 people will turn out.
