Southeastern Regional School District Breaks Ground on $33 Million Building Project in Partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority

(Easton, MA – November 30, 2011) Southeastern Regional School District is delighted to announce that, in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority, they have officially broken ground today on a major, $33 million dollar building and renovation project.

“We are very excited to collaborate with the MSBA and all of our partners on this exciting project,” said Superintendent Lopes. “This building project will allow us to continue to provide our students with a world-class vocational-technical education in new and improved facilities and, by partnering with the MSBA we were able to do so without any increase in capital assessments to the communities that make up our school district.”

The project, totaling approximately $32 Million, is in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority and will allow Southeastern Regional School District to address critical program and facility needs including:

 • SCIENCE – The construction of a science wing to meet the needs of the Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Life Sciences Courses.

 • HEALTH AND MEDICAL – Expansion of the Health Assistant Program to include new High School programs in Medical and Dental Assistant.

• CULINARY ARTS – Expansion of the culinary kitchen to accommodate the growing program needs and enrollment.

• VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS – Expansion of the program to include a black box theater and music room.

• CAFETERIA – Reconfiguration and expansion of the cafeteria which is undersized for the student population.

• MEDIA CENTER – Relocation and expansion of the media center in order to meet MSBA guidelines and educational needs.

• GYMNASIUM – Relocation of the existing gymnasium to the new addition in order to meet MIAA size requirements and meet MSBA size guidelines for the enrolled population.

Additionally, the project consists of school-wide facility improvements including roof repairs, window replacements, mechanical systems upgrades, ADA compliance measures, and life safety enhancements.

In July 2009, the MSBA launched the Vocational, Technical and Agricultural School Renew and Repair Program. The program commits $100 million to upgrading and repairing nine vocational technical high schools that have submitted Statements of Interest. This funding is in addition to the $200 million the MSBA has already committed to Voc/Tech schools over the past two years. This combined $300 million investment is the largest the state has made in its vocational technical schools in 30 years.

In March 2011, the MSBA approved funding for Southeastern Regional’s project.

State Treasurer and Chairman of the MSBA, Steven Grossman was the keynote speaker during the groundbreaking ceremony, which took place inside the new and future home of Southeastern Regional’s Early Childhood Education Center.

“Listening to the needs of a community and developing projects accordingly are priorities for the MSBA, and the Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School project is a case study in that sentiment,” said Treasurer Grossman.  “Thanks to our collaborative work with local officials, our $26 million investment will result in a modern learning facility that will better equip area students for a host of competitive and rewarding careers.”

Southeastern Regional Superintendent Luis Lopes, members of the Southeastern Regional School Committee, Mayor Linda M. Balzotti of Brockton, DRA Architects, W.T. Rich Co., Collaborative Partners and new MSBA Executive Director, John McCarthy, also presided over groundbreaking ceremonies.
