Seven student representatives from Southeastern Regional Voc Tech earned their pins as well as certificates for a job well done at the SkillsUSA Massachusetts Fall Leadership Conference at the Marlborough Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center, November 24-26, 2013. According to SkillsUSA Massachusetts, participants experienced “intensive leadership training in communication skills, group dynamics and employability skills, while having opportunities to become involved in the SkillsUSA Professional Development Program (PDP), earn a SkillsUSA Massachusetts Leader Award, and learn more about SkillsUSA’s various programs. Chapter Advisors at the conference also (had) the opportunity to earn Professional Development Points.”

Members of the SRVTHS team - Michael Amadea, Robert DeAndrade, Destiny Fuentes-Guerra, Kira Landry, Deja McCottrell, Nick Schmall and Trinity Seymour – enjoyed working in groups of teams with different projects as well as competitions. They also listened to presentations about SkillsUSA, team playing, bettering themselves and overcoming trials in a positive manner.

Medal winners include Michael Amadea, Gold, Customer Service Project; Destiny Fuentes Guerra and Nick Schmall, Gold, R2 (Environmental Green) Project; Trinity Seymour, Gold, Membership Promotional; Deja McCottrell, Silver, Team Profile. Additionally, Michael Amadea and Robert DeAndrade earned 8 hours of community service for participating in a cleanup and painting project at the local YMCA, after which they did a presentation of their experiences.

Team members were selected by their SkillsUSA Chapter Advisors, Sheila Fox and Anne-Marie Cafferty, on the basis of their potential to become good, strong leaders who represent the school in a positive manner. “In going into the program, some of the students were a little apprehensive in their new surroundings, but by the second day, they found themselves, excelled, and wanted to make the school shine. They stepped out of their comfort zone. It was a positive experience – they want to go back next year. The students were very well behaved, energetic, outgoing, enthusiastic, helpful to each other, and were the best group I’ve ever taken, and I’ve done this for many, many years,” noted Mrs. Fox.

Destiny Fuentes Guerra, a Junior and President of the SkillsUSA Chapter of Southeastern Regional participated with all of her sophomore groups, all of which earned team placement awards as follows: Michael Amadea (1st place), Destiny Fuentes Guerra (2nd place), Robert DeAndrade (3rd place), Trinity Seymour (4th place), Daja McCottrell (5th place) and Kira Landry (6th place).

Southeastern Regional’s Taylor Mackie, the Massachusetts SkillsUSA state officer, was among the 9 officers representing the state of Massachusetts and running the program.
