Southeastern Regional Hosts Guest Speaker Retired U.S Navy Chief of Staff, Navy Yard Shooting Survivor Jennifer Bennett

Superintendent Luis Lopes is pleased to share that former U.S. Navy Chief of Staff and Navy Yard Shooting survivor Jennifer Bennett recently visited Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School’s Legal & Protective Services students.

On Monday, Oct. 25, Bennett visited the school to tell her story of survival during the Navy Yard Shooting on Sept. 16, 2013 and share her message of resiliency and overcoming adversity.

A question-and-answer session was also held, moderated by Easton student Ariel Taylor, and students were able to ask Bennett questions based on what they’re learning in their courses.

Bennett served as a U.S. Navy Civil Servant for 26 years, progressing from a Program Analyst to several program management positions within the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the Navy’s premier systems acquisition and fleet support organization.

Bennett is one of four survivors of the 2013 shooting. She sustained a point-blank shotgun blast, yet survived. She was severely injured, undergoing many surgeries and extensive therapy in her recovery.

She has since authored a book, “Standing Still In a Culture of Mass Shootings,” about the shooting. Her book details her experience with healing and faith as well as the heroism and dedication of those who helped save her life.

“Ms. Bennett has an incredible, inspiring and timely story,” Superintendent Lopes said. “She challenged our students and staff to take mental health issues seriously and build a supportive and caring environment where everyone is appreciated.”

Bennett was introduced by Southeastern student Zekar-yah Henry of Brockton. High school administrators, School Committee members and other special guests were also in attendance. Bennett also participated in a student-led tour of the school.
