Senior’s Artwork Featured in Emerging Young Artists Juried Exhibition

Superintendent Luis Lopes and Principal Leslie Weckesser are pleased to announce that Senior Joscelina Alves Andrade Pina, of Brockton, was selected to have artwork exhibited in the Emerging Young Artists (EYA) 2022 Juried Exhibition.

The Exhibition is held online this year. From Friday, Jan. 21 through Sunday, Feb. 6, the selected works are featured on the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ website.

The EYA is hosted annually by the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The program received submissions from 656 students this year, from which 178 works were selected to be in the exhibition. The work featured will represent students from dozens of schools around New England.

Alves’ piece is titled “Capture the Moment.” It was created using Adobe Photoshop in May 2021 for an assignment in an Advertising Design class. As part of the assignment, students were asked to show motion using shapes. In Alves’ piece, the skateboard and position of the person implies movement because skateboarding is a familiar action. Alves additionally added different colors of shapes in the jacket, pants and hair to emphasize body motion and movement through space.

Alves submitted the piece to the Exhibition at the encouragement of Advertising Design teacher Abby Masi.

“Our Advertising Design department is very proud of Joscelina and the effort she put into her piece,” Masi said. “We are happy that her outstanding work will be shared and recognized.”

Added Principal Weckesser, “This is an excellent accomplishment for Joscelina and we are excited to see her work featured alongside other student artists in New England.”

To kick off the Exhibition, an opening, reception and awards presentation will be held virtually Friday evening, Jan. 21. All EYA student artist exhibitors will also receive a Certificate of Recognition.
