According to Ms Diaz, “the simpler you make a dessert at home, the healthier people will be”.
Ms Diaz is a student at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, studying Baking and Pastry. Home on an externship from April 3 – September 2, 2012, she works Tuesday through Saturday at the Konditor Meister in Braintree making decorations for and assembling cakes, taking orders, and working the pastry counter. It’s a job site like any other. People in hard hats shuffle back and forth under exposed pipes and wiring, dodging drywall amid the din of hammers and drills. A foreman barks orders, teasing the crew, who give it right back.
The crew is made up of students at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School in Easton, and their “bosses” are their teachers. Their project? Turning a former electrical shop into a day care center.
“I try to treat them just like they’re out on the street,” teacher Eddie Carll said.
Students have high praise for the chance to put their classroom experience to work.
“I love doing it,” said junior Chris Sullivan of Brockton, who is studying to be an electrician. “It’s getting me ready for the real workforce.”

A police officer responds to a call from a woman who is having a heated argument with her husband and his girlfriend. He knocks at the door, and there is no answer, so he breaks it down.
Inside, he finds the caller still yelling at the other woman. Both women have bruises on their face, but the girlfriend is more seriously bruised, and she has blood seeping from her forehead. The man’s arming is oozing blood, with glass shards embedded on the inside of his forearm.
The officer uses a loud voice to separate the women and tells them all to sit down. He then calls for medical help and talks to all three people individually, recording their version of the story. At the end, he must decide whose story makes the most sense, and whether or not he should make an arrest. read more...
Together they have razed concrete walls and floors, installed hundreds of metal studs, run miles of wire, and laid hundreds of feet of pipe. In short, they’ve dismantled a 6,000-square-foot building, which was an electricity shop, and are doing a top-to-bottom renovation to create Southeastern’s new Early Childhood Education Center.
The workers are junior students from construction, plumbing and electrical shops, who are spending all their vocational hours on the project. There are about 50 of them, supervised by three professionally licensed teachers, and they’ve thrived on the experience.
“It’s been fun working with everyone, and it’s nice to know what a real job is like,” said Patrick Piemonte, a plumbing student.

Seven-year-old Julia Berry faced a dilemma. Should she choose a chocolate chip cookie, the ever-popular cake balls or chocolate mousse?

Students run the restaurant, cook and serve the meals and menus change daily.

Seventeen-year-old Jacob Jennings has always loved plants and trees, so when it came time to choose his Eagle Scout project, he knew exactly where to go. He approached the director of the Natural Trust Resources in Easton, his hometown, to see if he could work on an outdoor project.
The timing was perfect.
The nonprofit organization had just received a grant to build four raised garden beds next to the Carriage House, at Sheep Pasture. NRT Director Jen Cummings had some blueprint plans for the layout, which included four raised beds in the middle of an open yard and a narrow garden area along the side of the building.
What made it such an ideal opportunity was that it was a simple plan that could be expanded – exactly the type of project Jennings likes. An environmental science major at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School, Jennings thrives on exceeding expectations.
“She (Cummings) told me that I could figure it out as I wanted. And I wanted to go above and beyond -- to make it a bigger project,” he said.

The season has just ended for the girls’ basketball team at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School, however, more than just another season- it is the end of an era. This year their devoted coach, James Carini, retires.
It all started 31 years ago when Carini joined Southeastern Regional. He had always loved basketball, having played in high school and college, and agreed to “temporarily” fill in as coach of the girls’ team before becoming the boys’ permanent coach.
While coaching the girls, he soon noticed their keen eagerness to listen and learn the game. He observed their strong work ethic and that whether they won or lost, they never quit. He admitted that by the time this “temporary” duty was up, “they had won me over.” He never did leave to coach the boys and the rest is history.
