Southeastern’s Legal and Protective Services (LPS) students recently hosted Congressman Jake Auchincloss, of Newton, to share his life journey to becoming a U.S. Congressman and Representative for the 4th District.

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, Congressman Auchincloss spoke with Legal and Protective and AP Government students at Southeastern about what it's like to be a representative and the ways to pursue a career in public service.  State Sen. Walter Timilty also attended the event.

LPS senior Britney Valdez, of Brockton, who is Student Representative to the Southeastern Regional School Committee, initiated the visit and invited Congressman Auchincloss to speak to her class about his personal experience as a representative and what it takes to become an elected official.

Throughout the morning, Congressman Auchincloss toured the school's medical simulation laboratory and spoke to the Medical Assisting students.

Congressman Auchincloss stated that while he peppered the Medical Assisting students and their teacher with questions about the curriculum and their career goals, a repeated refrain was their desire to help people by working in healthcare.

After the tour, Congressman Auchincloss spoke to students about his education experience at MIT and Harvard as well as his time in the Marine Corps and his political journey through the years, shaping him to be the leader that he is today.  He also spoke about his role as a representative, focusing on important issues of national security, economic development and healthcare.

The Congressman then held a Q & A that was open to students from all vocational programs. Students asked Rep. Auchincloss about specific bills he intends on passing, including gun violence and border security bills.  Other questions included his favorite part of American history and what his short and long term goals are as a representative.

"In my conversation with students, I spoke about gun violence legislation, social media regulation, and – my favorite point with students – the importance of taking smart risks early on to pursue your passion, even when you’re afraid to fail," said Congressman Auchincloss.

"I'm thankful to Congressman Auchincloss for visiting with us today," said Valdez.  "It was really great that he was able to have a conversation with my fellow classmates rather than just giving a speech.  He really listened to what they had to say, answering their questions and addressing their concerns about politics."
